In August 2020, the footballing world was torn apart as Lionel Messi sent in a transfer request away from the club he spent his entire life at.

Infamously, that transfer did not materialise; the clause that would supposedly allow the Argentinian to leave on a free-deal in the summer was heavily disputed, and refusing to take the “club of his dreams” to court, Messi chose to stay on for another season.

The only caveat, however, was that there would be no such dispute in the 2021 summer transfer window: the 33-year-old would be free to leave to any club that was willing and able to sign him.

The following season was characterised by uncertainty over Lionel Messi’s future at Camp Nou, who was reportedly unhappy with the project under then-president Josep Maria Bartomeu, who had resigned, leading to a presidential race wherein every single president predicated their campaigns on one promise: getting the captain to renew his contract.

Joan Laporta was the eventual winner, and there were signs of optimism with initial talks having “gone well” and Barcelona having found form under Ronald Koeman and undergoing an incredible league comeback.

The future seemed positive regarding Lionel Messi, who was reportedly enjoying life at La Blaugrana, although waiting till the end of the season to make a decision and instead focusing on the title race.

With the latest news, according to the ever-reliable journalist Achraf Ben Ayad, Lionel Messi has decided to continue at Barcelona and renew his contract.

It would appear that all exit rumours have been quelled, and the Argentinian will put pen to paper and continue under the president’s new sporting project, a promise that Laporta has, evidently, followed through on.

Culés worldwide were anxious over whether their beloved club captain would continue at the club of his dreams that he has spent his entire life at, epitomising the Barcelona identity and being the face of the club for more than a decade. There is no more uncertainty, for the future is clear: Messi stays.
