As revealed by El Chiringuito TV, Barcelona director Mateu Alemany held a meeting with the agent of Manchester City star Ilkay Gundogan earlier today. The meeting is said to have lasted for over an hour.

Gundogan has emerged as one of the priority targets for Barcelona heading into the summer. The Manchester City captain is set to become a free agent at the end of the season and is said to be keen on making the jump to Catalonia.

Despite being 32 years old, Gundogan showcased his quality and class in City’s UEFA Champions League quarter-final first leg against Bayern Munich earlier this week.

Following that display, Barcelona were reportedly spurred to up their efforts to try and close the signing of the German international.

Gundogan is appreciated within the Barça offices because of his versatility, leadership and experience. The former Borussia Dortmund star can play as an interior or a pivot if need be. His knowledge and experience could rub off on young midfielders like Pedri and Gavi.

The fact that he will be available for a free transfer is another appealing prospect for the La Liga leaders. And now, the meeting with his agent hints that a move could already be in the works.

Wage demands could pose an issue given Barcelona’s Financial Fair Play problems. But it has previously been reported that Gundogan would be willing to make some adjustments to his salary knowing the club’s situation.

This is certainly a positive development for Barça, who are primarily looking at free transfers and bargain signings in the market.

The La Liga leaders are understood to have already closed the capture of Inigo Martinez, who has reportedly signed a two-year contract with the club.

And soon, Gundogan could follow suit, although he will likely seek assurances that Barcelona will not face any issues with his registration in the summer.
