With players currently away on international duty with their respective national teams, club football takes a backseat. At the same time, stars have to set aside their rivalries at club level so that they can achieve success for their country.

The rivalry between Real Madrid and Barcelona is well-established but given the quality of players in both teams, a lot of them end up playing together for their national teams.

For example, Barcelona duo Jules Kounde and Ousmane Dembele will be playing with Real Madrid’s Aurelien Tchouameni and Ferland Mendy for France. Raphinha is away with Brazil, where he will team up with the likes of Vinicius Jr, Rodrygo and Eder Militao.

Similarly for Spain, six Barcelona players – Pedri, Gavi, Ferran Torres, Eric Garcia, Jordi Alba and Sergio Busquets will be playing with Dani Carvajal and Marco Asensio from Real Madrid.

And ahead of their UEFA Nations League fixtures, Alba and Carvajal attended a promotional event with RFEF President Luis Rubiales, during which the two full-backs could not stop singing praises of one another.

The Barcelona defender was full of praise for the Real Madrid right-back, stating that he wished they were not rivals at the club level.

As quoted by SPORT, he said: “He has been at a high level for many years, he is very competitive. He is the best at his position in recent years. Too bad to have him in the rival. We are very good friends.”

Reciprocating the admiration, Carvajal spoke about Alba, saying: “He is one of the best in the world. I don’t like to face him because he’s too heavy.”

“We have a very good relationship,” the Real Madrid right-back further added.

Spain face Switzerland and Portugal in the Nations League over the next couple of weeks. Having made it to the semi-finals of the UEFA Euro 2020 last year and then progressed to the Nations League finals, there are a lot of hopes on La Roja ahead of the World Cup.

Talking about the same, Alba added: “As a result of the European Championship, people have become hooked again. The team must respond, the staff, players, the president, we are all united and people are watching it.”

Alba’s selection for the national team was a bit controversial as he has hardly played for Barcelona this season. But manager Luis Enrique has put his trust in the veteran defender. The 33-year-old will be hoping to make an impression in the next two games.
