With March just around the corner, it is fair to say that the title race in Spain has shaped up quite nicely as we approach the final phase of the campaign.

Real Madrid, though, have established a solid lead at the top of the table, with a six-point lead over Girona. However, with 12 games remaining, the league is far from over.

Earlier today, Barcelona president Joan Laporta has backed the Catalans to fight until the very end for the league title.

“There is a league, of course there is a league,” he said, as per AS.

Javier Tebas echoes Laporta’s sentiments

Now, Javier Tebas has echoed Laporta’s sentiments, adding that the title race is still open despite Real Madrid’s stupendous lead.

“Of course, there is a title race,” said Tebas (h/t Mundo Deportivo), who answered various questions from the press regarding Barcelona’s chances to stage a late comeback.

“Barcelona have very good players, young and with a great projection. If we look at the last five games, be careful that they don’t get back on top,” Tebas said.

Barcelona have indeed performed well in recent weeks. The club have won four of their last five league matches, with their only mishap coming in a 3-3 draw with Granada.

The Catalans, however, are trailing arch-rivals Real Madrid by a whopping eight points. Tebas, though, believes there are too many games still remaining and the club still have a chance of making a late surge.

“I’ve seen Madrid comebacks of 10 points. There are a lot of games left,” he said.

It is indeed worth considering that a total of 12 matches correspond to 36 points. Barcelona are behind Real Madrid by eight points and Girona by two points, but they will face both teams later this season.

Therefore, we may have to wait a bit more to find out whether or not Barcelona can indeed stage a late surge for the league title.
