Frenkie de Jong has been one of the hottest topics in the transfer market throughout the summer so far, with clubs like Manchester United and PSG keen on attaining his services.
The club were initially reluctant in offloading the midfielder. But in light of Barcelona’s financial crisis, they have appeared receptive to offers.
They had even reportedly reached an agreement with Man United over the sale of de Jong earlier this summer, but the player rejected the move, in favour of a prolonged stay at Camp Nou.
De Jong is happy with his life in Barcelona and wants to keep working with Xavi Hernandez. He believes he can become a pivotal part of the club’s long-term success under the Spanish tactician.
But amid intense speculation over his future and Barcelona seemingly keen on sanctioning an exit, de Jong is starting to reconsider his position, reports Diario SPORT.
The report suggests the Dutchman is aware of the fact that Barcelona want to offload him in the summer in order to generate revenue that could go a long way in helping them in pursuit of Raphinha and Robert Lewandowski, among many others.
Even from a tactical perspective, de Jong has been a bit of a misfit at Barça, not performing at the required level. Although Xavi rates the player highly, there is no secret he prefers a more attack-minded interior midfielder who can offer creativity going forward.
It has led to de Jong considering an exit from Barcelona this summer. He is tempted by the opportunity to join Manchester United, where he will be able to reunite with his former coach Erik ten Hag.
With Nemanja Matic and Paul Pogba leaving the club, the former Ajax starlet may even have the opportunity to become a midfield leader for Man United in the years to come.
However, the fate of the Barcelona midfielder is far from resolved. Man United will have to offer Barça a lucrative package for his services while they may face stiff competition from PSG, another club desperate to add some quality in the middle of the park this summer.
