Former Manchester United forward offers himself to Barcelona as a free agent in January

“We have to make people see that at the moment we can’t bring in anyone else, it’s a reality. We are in constant contact with Deco, Yuste and others. Roque is a signing for the future, but there could also be a bet for the present,” Xavi said in his recent press conference ahead of Barcelona’s clash against Union Deportiva Barbastro.

The manager’s words quite aptly summarise the club’s situation. Strapped for cash and financial leeway, Barcelona barely have space for a new signing in January amidst a sporting crisis from a results perspective.

One line of hope

As revealed by SPORT, a certain Jesse Lingard has offered himself to Barcelona in the ongoing winter transfer market. As it stands, he may well be one of the Catalans’ only available options who would fit in from an economic sense.

The former Manchester United star and English international is currently without a team after leaving Nottingham Forest at the end of the 2021-22 season. His time at the English club did not go well, thus leaving him stranded with no suitors.

The player thus sees Barcelona to be an ideal place to resurrect his career. He is currently training in Dubai and is waiting for a reply from the Catalan offices.

Lingard being a free agent would not burden Barcelona from an economic perspective a whole lot. He could enter the team’s dynamics for a figure of less than €2 million for the rest of the season, making him the ideal fit.

Moreover, Xavi and Co see him as a versatile player who can operate down the centre or out on the flanks. His experience across various leagues and at various levels is another critical factor.

A hectic schedule

If the former Manchester United star is to arrive on loan until the end of the season, it might well pay off for Barcelona to take the gamble.

Lingard, indeed, may be far from his best form. Yet, Xavi has been known to resurrect the best version of players who appeared lost in the past, and the Englishman could well be a catalyst in the team’s hectic schedule ahead.

Negotiations between the parties are expected to progress in the coming weeks, although it remains to be seen how far both entourages are willing to go to strike an agreement. Needless to say, Lingard must be prepared for an insignificant salary if he is to join the club.
