With the January transfer window fast approaching, the rumour mill is buzzing with speculation, some that make sense, some outright bizarre.

Barcelona are involved in the thick of things, though, which is natural considering that there is a new manager in place, the squad has been ravaged by injuries, and there are several players performing well below expectations. But given the club’s financial situation, making moves in the winter window will be anything but straightforward.

Nonetheless, the Catalans continue to be linked with players, as Xavi Hernandez seeks reinforcements in attack. The likes of Ferran Torres, Edinson Cavani, Raheem Sterling have all been touted as targets, but now El Nacional has thrown an exciting name in the mix.

The report claims that former Barcelona forward, Alexis Sanchez, could be an option that the club consider, with the 32-year-old very much open to the idea of a second spell at Camp Nou.

The Chilean international signed for the Blaugrana in the summer of 2011 from Udinese at the insistence of then-manager Pep Guardiola. However, things did now work out too well for him in Catalonia, as he never became a regular starter in the side.

After three years, during which he made 146 appearances and scored 46 goals, Sanchez signed for Arsenal in 2014, where he tasted a lot of success. An ill-advised move to Manchester United followed before he ended up at Inter Milan in 2019.

While the veteran attacker was part of the Serie A title-winning side last season, he is not seen as an integral member of the team, with the likes of Edin Dzeko, Joaquin Correa and Lautaro Martinez ahead of him in the pecking order. So, he could be open to the possibility of a January exit and would move to Barça if Xavi & co. came calling.

The Catalans have already re-signed a former player in Dani Alves, despite him being 38 years old. Whether they decide to repeat the trick with Alexis will be interesting to see, although his contract with the Nerazzurri runs till 2023, meaning a transfer fee would be involved.
