After leaving his post as the sporting director of FC Barcelona last month, Mateu Alemany is now closing in on a move to rivals Atletico Madrid, reports COPE (h/t Carpetas FCB).

Alemany joined Barça in 2021 as part of Joan Laporta’s restructure after the latter won the presidential elections.

During his two-and-a-half-year spell at the Catalan club, the Spaniard did a brilliant job of building a strong squad despite the prevailing economic struggles at Barça.

Why did Alemany leave?

Alemany had announced his departure from Barcelona in May and was all set to sign for Aston Villa during the summer. But he made a big U-turn and decided to continue at Barcelona.

However, eventually, the former Valencia director once again opted to part ways with the La Liga champions following the reduction of his role during the summer with Deco taking over as the new director.

Even though Deco’s official announcement was made at a later date, the former Portuguese international was already handling the transfer and recruitment department during the summer.

Reports suggested that there was a ‘professional mismatch’ between Alemany and Deco over how they operated which played a role in his exit.

On his way to Atletico Madrid…

Now, Alemany is all set to sign for Atletico Madrid with an agreement understood to be close to being finalised.

Reports of Los Rojiblancos’ interest surfaced last month itself, with his knowledge of La Liga’s Financial Fair Play rules and his contacts with the league officials are things that make him an appealing target for Atletico Madrid.

Now, the move appears to be close to being completed even though there had been murmurs of interest from the likes of Tottenham Hotspur in the past.
