Barcelona got off the mark in the 2023/24 La Liga with a hard-earned 2-0 victory over Cadiz at Estadi Olimpic Lluis Companys on Sunday night.

In what was their first home game of the campaign, the Blaugrana were made to work for the three points, but second-half strikes from Pedri and Ferran Torres sealed the victory for Xavi Hernandez & co.

Pedri has grown into one of the most pivotal figures for Xavi’s Barça side and he stepped up once again last night when the going got tough.

The Golden Boy Award winner has scored 10 goals in La Liga since the arrival of Xavi, of which seven have come with the score 0-0.

Marc-Andre ter Stegen also had a fine game in goal as he continued where he left off last season, securing his second clean sheet in as many games in the new campaign.

Such has been his brilliance in goal, especially in home games, that, excluding own goals, the 31-year-old has saved 35 of the 38 shots he has faced at home in La Liga since last season (three goals conceded).

It was a momentous occasion for young prodigy Lamine Yamal as he made his first-ever start for Barcelona.

At 16 years and 38 days, Yamal became the youngest player in history to start a La Liga game for Barcelona. He broke the record held by Ansu Fati (16y 318d).

In addition, the La Masia wonderkid also became the youngest player to make a La Liga start in the 21st century, beating the previous record set by Fabrice Olinga back in September 2012 (16y 112d).

Meanwhile, Barcelona captain Sergi Roberto also reached a personal milestone on Sunday night as he made his 350th appearance for the club when he came on to replace Oriol Romeu in the 79th minute.
