With just one week remaining before the new season gets underway, Barcelona are working hard to get rid of Frenkie de Jong.
The Dutchman has found himself alienated by the club’s squad planning ahead of the new season, especially due to his lucrative salary that has crippled the club’s powers in the market.
Manchester United and Chelsea are among the clubs interested in the services of de Jong this summer, with the Red Devils, in particular, making several attempts to lure him from Catalonia and help him reunite with former coach Erik ten Hag.
However, the former Ajax starlet has resisted every attempt to lure him to Old Trafford. And according to English manager Harry Redknapp, the midfielder has no intention of joining Manchester United anytime soon.
In a recent interaction, Redknapp claimed that de Jong has already chosen his next destination and it is not Manchester United. The manager believes the player wants to move to London and join Chelsea ahead of the new season.
“Frenkie de Jong wants to join Chelsea, I know it’s a fact he wants to play for them,” said Redknapp (h/t Diario SPORT), citing a very important executive figure at Manchester United as his main source.
The report from SPORT suggests Chelsea’s participation in the UEFA Champions League could be the major factor behind de Jong’s desire to move to Stamford Bridge.
However, at the moment, nothing has been decided yet and Barcelona are still in negotiations with various parties in an attempt to sanction the sale of their prized midfielder ahead of the new season.
In the event of de Jong’s departure, Barcelona are expected to go after Manchester City superstar Bernardo Silva, who had been Xavi’s top choice for quite a while now.
