After months and months of speculations, the Ousmane Dembele contract saga is finally coming to an end it seems.
According to Sique Rodriguez on SER Catalunya, Dembele has rejected the latest contract proposal from Barcelona and is all set to depart as a free agent in a little over two weeks’ time.
The 25-year-old’s contract situation has dominated the headline for a long time. The Catalans had ended talks with the winger’s camp midway through the campaign after he had rejected a contract offer at the time.
However, his performances in the second half of the season and the insistence of manager Xavi Hernandez forced the club to reinitiate negotiations over the past couple of months.
Despite having held multiple meetings with Dembele’s camp, an agreement had not been finalised. Over the past weeks, reports started to emerge that the French international was close to agreeing terms with Chelsea, while he was yet to respond to Barça’s proposal.
The Blaugrana, for their part, had already decided not to hold any more fresh meetings and had started plans for the upcoming campaign without factoring in the former Borussia Dortmund starlet.
Now, as per the aforementioned report, Dembele has decided not to accept Barcelona’s offer of an extension. It is further claimed that the Catalan heavyweights do not intend to return with any more fresh proposals, meaning that the winger’s fate is pretty much sealed.
Dembele, whose contract runs out on June 30, will now leave the club as a free agent when that happens. It would bring an end to his five-year association with Barça, after he arrived from Dortmund in the summer of 2017, in a deal worth €130 million to replace Neymar.
His time at Camp Nou has been largely dominated by injuries and fitness problems, while he has also had problems with disciplinary behaviour off the field.
