Barcelona have made some important steps in their bid to sign Vitor Roque, as Xavi Hernandez looks to beef up his options in the attacking department.

But another priority for the Barcelona coach is to sign a new defensive midfielder, following the exit of Sergio Busquets. Although the club have no shortage of midfielders, Xavi is looking for a reliable number six that can fill in the shoes of Busquets next season.

Barcelona had targeted multiple options in the transfer market, but their options have been shrinking lately. Ruben Neves looks set to move to Saudi Arabia while Sofyan Amrabat is reportedly keen on joining rivals Atletico Madrid.

Barcelona’s other options such as Martin Zubimendi and Joshua Kimmich could prove to be too expensive for the club as well. The club, therefore, are now exploring a deal for Guido Rodriguez.

This has been reported by SPORT, which suggests the player is rated highly by Barça boss Xavi. He wants the Argentine to fill the number six slot at Camp Nou next season, especially following the player’s impressive performances in La Liga over the past few years.

With Rodriguez’s contract expiring in 2024, Real Betis could look to offload the 2022 FIFA World Cup winner in the upcoming summer transfer window. But the report adds that Barcelona are yet to make any concrete move for the player.

There is a possibility the Blaugrana will add some players into the equation in order to lower the price tag of Rodriguez. Nico and Abde Ezzalzouli are two of the Barcelona players rated highly by Real Betis and could enter the operation for Rodriguez, whose market value stands at €28 million.

In the meantime, though, Barça are focusing on completing the capture of Vitor Roque and Ilkay Gundogan, who is expected to make a decision on his future later this month.
