Courtois mocks Barcelona for UCL and Copa del Rey exit: “Saturday to Saturday”
Real Madrid squared up against Cadiz away from home yesternight for gameweek 29th of La Liga. They had the chance to cut down Barcelona’s lead on top of the table to ten points – even though it promises very little in terms of defending the title.
After a chaotic 70 minutes or so which saw Rodrygo and Karim Benzema miss several good chances, Nacho came through for Madrid, breaking the deadlock with a superb effort from range.
Marco Asensio doubled their lead from inside the box, and los blancos eventually rode to the three points in the last 20 minutes.
Thibaut Courtois spoke to the press following their win, and cheekily mocked Barcelona for only having La Liga to play for, for the rest of the 2022/23 season.
“There is a long distance in points with Barcelona, but we still have the Copa del Rey and we play during the week in the UCL. Others only play from Saturday to Saturday [laughs].”
Barcelona’s elimination from the Champions League, Europa League and the Copa del Rey came largely off the back of serious injuries to some of their best players.
Ronald Araujo, Jules Kounde, Andreas Christensen were all missing when they were knocked out from the UCL, while Pedri and Ousmane Dembele were sidelined during the Europa League.
Not to forget their humiliating 0-4 loss against Real Madrid in the Copa del Rey semi-finals second leg, when Pedri, Dembele, Andreas Christensen, and Frenkie de Jong were all missing from the starting lineup.
As far as Madrid as concerned, they will take on Chelsea in the second leg of the UCL quarter-finals on Tuesday, while playing Osasuna in the Copa del Rey final in May.
