Barcelona defender Clement Lenglet has had to endure a decline in stature over the past eighteen months or so.
The Frenchman had been a regular starter upon arrival from Sevilla in 2018, impressing in his debut season while he remained a regular in the subsequent campaign. However, his influence has been on the wane for a while now, with the defender slowly falling out of favour under Ronald Koeman last term.
Things have not improved much under Xavi Hernandez in the current campaign either, with there being reports that Barça are looking to offload him. These rumours gained more weight after the club’s exit from the Champions League following the defeat to Bayern Munich.
Now, Gerard Romero is reporting that Premier League club Tottenham Hotspur are interested in signing Lenglet ahead of the January transfer window.
The journalist claims that the north London giants had been keen on signing the 26-year-old during the summer itself. However, the defender rejected the move as he had no intentions of moving to England.
But with Spurs set to revive their interest in January, it will be interesting to see if Lenglet is willing to change his stance, considering that he has hardly been playing regularly this term.
Barcelona, for their part, might be open to a sale as they need to raise funds to bring in new players. Although the club would likely prefer to offload Samuel Umtiti first, the lack of interest in his services could become an issue again.
In Ronald Araujo, Eric Garcia, Gerard Pique, Oscar Mingueza Barça have options in defence while they could also turn to B team prospects Mika Marmol and Arnau Comas if needed.
Lenglet signed a new contract with the Catalans last year, extending his stay at Camp Nou till 2026. So, he should be able to fetch a decent sum in case the club decided to part ways in January.
