According to a report published by SPORT, Chelsea have stepped up their pursuit of Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong. They have submitted a bid of €70 million-plus-Marcos Alonso to sign the Dutchman, the report says.
Barcelona are trying to offload de Jong this summer in the hopes of raising money through player sales, and have set an €85 million price tag on him.
Manchester United have largely been the front-runners for his signature, but Chelsea and Bayern Munich have been quoted with an interest as well.
In fact, Barcelona have already reached an agreement with United for a deal worth €85 million including add-ons, but the player has refused to move as of now.
He feels comfortable at Barcelona, and is not ready to give up on his Blaugrana dream after just three seasons. Further, de Jong believes United is a poorly-run club, and further, does not want to join a team that is not playing in the Champions League next season.
Consequently, there is a much better chance he joins Chelsea, instead. But the Blues will have to make a much better offer if they want the services of the 25-year-old.
