After rejecting the new terms at Barcelona, Ousmane Dembele could find himself a new suitor, as the winger looks to take the next step in his career.
Following the news of his exit from Barça, Dembele had become a top target for a number of clubs across Europe. PSG, in particular, were keen on bringing the winger back to Ligue 1, but they have reportedly pulled the plug on the deal following the likely appointment of Luis Campos.
It has left Chelsea as the firm favourites to seal the deal to sign Ousmane Dembele, reports Mundo Deportivo (h/t Evening Standard).
Following PSG’s exit, Chelsea are increasingly confident of signing the Barcelona winger, who has an excellent rapport with Thomas Tuchel.
The duo had worked together at Borussia Dortmund, with Tuchel playing a key role behind the winger’s ascension into professional football. He was one of the star players in the Bundesliga prior to his big-money move to Barcelona.
While the Frenchman has not been able to fulfil his potential at Camp Nou, Tuchel believes he can bring the best out of the explosive forward once again, this time at the Stamford Bridge.
From a sporting perspective, Dembele could prove to be an upgrade over Christian Pulisic and Hakim Ziyech. His trickery and pace out wide could add a new dimension to Chelsea’s approach play in the final third.
Barcelona, meanwhile, will be disappointed to have lost Dembele, especially after the Frenchman’s excellent performances during the second half of the campaign.
Xavi had rated the winger very highly and had played a key role in his return to form. But with Dembele on the verge of joining Chelsea, the Catalans must kickstart their operation to replace him in the market.
They have targeted Raphinha as the ideal replacement for the Frenchman. But the deal to sign the Leeds United starlet could be tricky, as the Whites continue to hold out for a hefty figure.
