Chelsea hold a ‘tentative interest’ in 28-year-old Barcelona ace – English sources

According to a report published by Guardian, Chelsea have registered their interest in Barcelona’s Memphis Depay, as they continue to look for forwards this summer.
Memphis was Barcelona’s top scorer last season, but his importance reduced drastically as the club’s managers changed mid-way during the season. He was Ronald Koeman’s main man, but was no more than a regular face off the bench as Xavi came along.
His troubles have further worsened with the arrival of Robert Lewandowski and Raphinha, and is now looking at the exit door.
That said, he is not ready to leave, and per reports, has told the dressing room that he will continue at the Camp Nou, “even if six more forwards are signed”.
Barcelona are trying to push him out, especially because he is among their only source of income through player sales. With a €20 million price tag on him, Memphis is no short of suitors if he decides to leave.
Today, it was reported that he has set two conditions on his exit, one being that the club allows him to leave for free. That gives him the liberty to negotiate with any club of his choice without the pressure of the club on his shoulder.
The other is that he wants to join a ‘big team’. Leaving on a free will certainly open up more options, including more top teams.
Barca Universal’s take
On paper, Memphis Depay and Chelsea’s marriage makes a lot of sense. They desperately need another creative deputy in their squad, and also someone who can drop deep to collect the ball and drive the attack forward. It’s actually surprising that it took so long for their rumour to surface.
It also fits into Memphis’ desire to play for a top team. In fact, with him, they exponentially boost their chances of making it to top four, especially after the transfer window Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal have had.
The Dutchman is available for as little as €20 million (which can be brought down further, surely), and Chelsea have the resources to make this operation come to life. Make it happen.
