While the likes of Robert Lewandowski and Jules Kounde have dominated Barcelona’s transfer market activity in recent weeks, the club are quietly making moves elsewhere in the market.

According to journalist Jose Alvarez of El Chiringuito, Barcelona are closing in on the capture of Cesar Azpilicueta. The Chelsea defender has been one of the club’s main defensive targets this summer and Xavi’s ideal candidate to replace Dani Alves.

Alvarez suggests Barcelona are expected to pay a fee of only €3 million for Azpilicueta, whose contract at Stamford Bridge was set to expire this summer, but a special clause in the contract saw Chelsea extend it until 2023.

As a result, Barça may have to pay a fee of up to €3 million for Azpilicueta. The Spaniard’s addition to the club could go a long way in solving Xavi’s problems in the right-back department.

Although it appears Sergino Dest will remain at Camp Nou this summer, the American international has never really managed to fulfil his potential at the club. That is where the presence of the highly-experienced Azpilicueta could come in handy.

The veteran defender can offer experience and leadership to the table and could be the second Chelsea defender to join the club this summer, after Andreas Christensen.

Barcelona, though, are working on a deal to bring in another Chelsea defender in Marcos Alonso. The former Fiorentina star has been identified as an ideal player to compete with Jordi Alba at left-back next season.

However, signing Alonso could be much trickier as his value is much higher due to his age. Chelsea reportedly want around €12 million for his services, but it has been deemed too expensive for Barcelona.

The Catalans are only willing to fork out €7-8 million for the services of Alonso and it will not be surprising to see this transfer saga drag on longer than Azpilicueta.
