Besiktas join race for the signing of Barcelona striker
With the January transfer window now arriving, Luuk de Jong is expected to move on from Barcelona imminently.
La Liga strugglers Cadiz are keen on adding him to their roster and have an agreement in place with Barça and Sevilla. However, the Dutchman is yet to greenlight a move to the club, as he hopes to join a team with better sporting prospects.
A fresh suitor has now emerged in his pursuit in the form of Turkish giants Besiktas, reports Fanatik (h/t Mundo Deportivo).
The Istanbul-based outfit are intent on bolstering their attacking ranks in the January window as they look to make a push for the European qualification spots and have identified the on-loan Barcelona forward as a target.
Signed from Sevilla on a season-long temporary deal, with an option to buy, on the summer transfer deadline day, the Netherlands striker has proven to be a huge dud at Camp Nou.
Having gotten his fair share of chances under Ronald Koeman, the 31-year-old target man failed to make any impact. And gradually, he fell out of favour, with the appointment of Xavi Hernandez as manager effectively spelling an end to his Barça career.
Indeed, since the Barcelona legend took over the reins, Luuk de Jong has played just 103 minutes of football. The arrival of Ferran Torres from Manchester City earlier in the week is set to push him further down the pecking order.
And, Barça are ready to cut short his stay at Camp Nou in order to free up some room on the wage bill. The 31-year-old is not welcome at his parent club Sevilla either, making for an awkward situation.
However, there seems to be no shortage of clubs interested in signing him on loan for the remainder of the season, with Cadiz and Besiktas keen. Apart from those two teams, Fenerbahce and PSV Eindhoven are also looking at de Jong as a prospective target.
It remains to be seen where the 31-year-old ends up in the coming weeks. But one thing is certain – his time at Camp Nou is fast approaching its end.
