With Barcelona targeting a move for a new left-footed centre-back in the summer, it could end up spelling trouble for one or two of the defenders that are already on the club’s books.

Indeed, according to AS, Barcelona would be open to selling veteran defender Jordi Alba in the summer transfer window while the departure of fellow Spaniard Eric Garcia could also be on the cards.

This development comes amidst the Blaugrana’s links to left-footed centre-halves. A move for Inigo Martinez is reported to be in advanced stages already.

At the same time, Manchester City ace Aymeric Laporte is also heavily linked with a move to Spotify Camp Nou and it is being claimed that the Spanish international would even be willing to reduce his wages to secure a move to Barcelona.

Should one of them arrive at the club, the Catalan heavyweights will have an overstocked centre-half department, considering that they already have Ronald Araujo, Jules Kounde, Andreas Christensen, and Garcia while Marcos Alonso has also been used as a centre-back.

In that scenario, Barcelona would not be averse to making cuts to their defensive department, with Alba likely to be the one that is shown the doors. The veteran’s involvement, of late, has reduced and his contract expires next year.

The Blaugrana made an attempt to sell him last summer and could do so again this time out, with Alejandro Balde and Alonso then becoming the only options at left-back.

At the same time, selling Garcia is also not ruled out. The ex-Manchester City ace has struggled to stay relevant in Xavi’s plans this season. Even when he has featured, the Spanish international has been largely poor.

Should another defender arrive, the La Masia ace’s game-time will take a further hit. At that point he will need to take a decision on whether he is happy to continue as a backup or leave in search of regular minutes.
