Barcelona’s pursuit of Manchester City heavyweight could be in jeopardy – report

A recent report from Edu Polo of Mundo Deportivo has offered a rather worrying update on Barcelona’s pursuit of Ilkay Gundogan.
Not more than a few weeks ago, the Catalans looked in control of the operation and were even said to have had an agreement with the Manchester City captain over a three-year contract. But due to La Liga not approving their economic viability plan, the club have been unable to advance the talks.
Now, Barcelona’s Gundogan pursuit could be in serious jeopardy. The player, for one, has performed extremely well and has helped the club secure the Premier League title. He is also in contention to win the treble by the end of the season.
There is no question that Gundogan likes captaining Manchester City, who are now ready to lengthen the contract renewal offer for the German international, in an attempt to keep him at the club. The 32-year-old is said to be looking at the fresh renewal offer quite favourably.
Barcelona, therefore, are not feeling optimistic about the Gundogan pursuit and there is a significant chance they could miss out on the signing of the former Borussia Dortmund star.
In addition to Manchester City’s willingness to lengthen their contract offer, another key reason that has impacted Barça’s pursuit of the German is La Liga’s delay in approving the Financial Feasibility Plans.
The Spanish authority has required more time and documents before they can formally approval Barcelona’s plans. Without any approval, the Catalans are not being able to ascertain their economic limitations in the transfer market this summer.
So it goes without saying that La Liga’s delay may also affect Barcelona’s pursuit of Lionel Messi. But the club are hoping to raise money through the impending departure of Jordi Alba and Sergio Busquets.
They may also look for suitors for their fringe players and announce new sponsorship deals in an attempt to boost revenue.
