It has been a difficult past month or so for Barcelona defender Alejandro Balde.
The 20-year-old started the season as the first-choice left-back for Barça and a regular for the Spanish national team. But things have changed for the La Masia graduate over the past few weeks.
With Balde’s form dipping, he has lost his starting spot at Barcelona to Joao Cancelo, who featured as the left-back in crucial games against FC Porto and Atletico Madrid.
This comes after he was left out of the Spanish national team squad during the last international break by manager Luis de la Fuente.
Balde angry after not featuring vs Atletico
Now, Gerard Romero is reporting that Balde was very angry after not playing a single minute during last night’s match against Atletico Madrid, despite having warmed up for a while on the sidelines.
As mentioned earlier, Cancelo started at left-back once again last night and put on another impressive performance.
And unlike the Porto game, Balde did not come on as a substitute last night, with Xavi opting for only three substitutions as his team secured a 1-0 win.
As such, Balde was understood to be angry after not coming on despite warming up for a while and is understood to have walked off to the dressing room right after full-time.
Barcelona concerned about Balde’s form
Recent reports have already suggested that Barcelona are concerned about Balde’s dip in form this season.
There have been deficiencies in his game, both in attack and defence, with there being some worry about complacency setting in after his long-term contract renewal.
It is now up to the 20-year-old to step up and make a difference when he gets an opportunity in the matches to come.
