Even though we are only a couple of months into the 2023/24 season, plans are already underway at FC Barcelona to strengthen the squad next summer.

At the moment, a new midfielder and two full-backs appear to be the top priorities for the Catalan heavyweights for the summer window of 2024.

At the same time, though, a new left winger also appears to be on the agenda, which has sparked rumours of interest in players like Jadon Sancho and Nico Williams, along with a certain Kaoru Mitoma of Brighton & Hove Albion.

Barcelona like Kaoru Mitoma

Indeed, as reported earlier this month, Barcelona have taken a liking to Brighton & Hove Albion winger Kaoru Mitoma.

The 26-year-old enjoyed a spectacular 2022/23 season with the Seagulls, finishing with ten goals and eight assists across all competitions, and has made seven goal contributions in the ongoing campaign.

The report suggested that Barça like Mitoma because of his speed, dribbling ability, and technical quality, in addition to the fact that he can produce goals and assists regularly.

Mitoma signs new contract extension

However, Barcelona have now been dealt a big blow in any hope they had of signing Mitoma next summer.

Brighton & Hove Albion have announced that Mitoma has signed a new contract with the club, prolonging his stay by two more years from 2025 to 2027.

Since Mitoma’s previous deal would expire in 2025, he would enter the final year of his contract at Brighton next summer, at which point Barcelona planned to swoop.

As such, Brighton have acted quickly to nip that scenario in the bud by extending his contract until 2027.

This development comes as a blow to Barça’s plans, but Mundo Deportivo reports that the Catalans intend to continue monitoring Mitoma.
