Two La Masia prodigies scored for La Roja in the recent international break.
First, it was Lamine Yamal who netted against Georgia in the team’s EURO qualifier, becoming Spain’s youngest-ever goalscorer in the process. Gavi got on the scoresheet in the subsequent game against Cyprus with a well-worked finish.
Interestingly, both the Barcelona stars were assisted by a certain Nico Williams who has been linked with a move to Catalonia in recent days.
Barcelona looking to play the free-agent card
The Catalans have eyed free agents in recent transfer windows owing to their dire economic situation. Williams’ profile interests them on that front.
The Athletic Bilbao youngster is one of Spain’s brightest talents. His contract with his current employers runs out next summer, and Barcelona hope to pounce on the opportunity.
Joan Laporta and co. have already made contact with the youngster’s entourage and have conveyed their interest in Williams.
Athletic Club president quashes Barcelona links
Considering that Nico is one of the Basque side’s most valued assets, Athletic Bilbao president John Uriarte was quizzed on Williams’ possible departure next summer.
“Both Nico and his family are very happy in Bilbao and at Athletic Bilbao. We both are working so that he can stay here for many years,” he firmly stated (h/t FCB World), conveying Athletic Club’s desire to keep the winger for the long term.
He, in fact, echoed the manager Ernesto Valverde’s words from a day ago.
“We hope that Nico will be here with us for a long time,” the former Barcelona manager said about his player.
The Basque side have historically been known to nurture and promote only their homegrown stars, and their players have always responded with their complete commitment.
On that front, it is difficult to foresee a scenario wherein they do not renew his contract in the coming months and secure his future.
