SPORT has reported that Barcelona are contemplating the idea of incorporating Chelsea’s 21-year-old left-back Ian Maatsen.

It’s no secret that Barcelona are exploring the possibility of bolstering the left-back position in the upcoming summer transfer window.

However, right now, the team from Catalonia does have the option of extending Marcos Alonso’s contract, provided that he accepts to adjust his salary.

In any way, the club’s sporting department is primarily focused on acquiring promising talents under favourable terms.

One such option being considered is Maatsen, a left-footed player from Chelsea, whose contract expires at the end of the season, although no definitive decision will be made at least until January.

Barcelona want a left-back, but under their terms

It’s important to note that Barcelona believe they already have solid coverage at the left-back position with the emergence of Alejandro Balde, who is the undisputed starter in that role.

Thus, any addition to the squad in this area would be in a complementary role, with a clear understanding of their place in the team. This leaves the door open for Alonso to continue, provided he agrees to a salary that aligns with the club’s expectations.

Alternatively, there’s also the possibility of promoting youth player Alex Valle after his loan spell at Levante, though additional options are being explored, with Maatsen being a viable candidate.

Maatesen, the Netherlands U21 international, has been at Chelsea since 2018, but the youngster has never really found a place in the first-team.

As such, since joining the Premier League side, he has had three loan spells with Charlton Athletic, Coventry City, and Burnley.

Given that his contract expires in June, he has received a renewal offer from Chelsea despite knowing that he will not be a regular starter at the club. This situation strongly indicates that he may be seeking a change of scenery at the end of the season.

As far as his playing style is concerned, he is a versatile player, capable of operating as a winger or left-back, and he demonstrated his abilities during a successful loan spell at Burnley last year.

Meanwhile, SPORT also mentions that Barcelona’s scouting team has been monitoring him for several years as a potential reinforcement due to his impressive offensive attributes, and the report has been excellent.

However, any decision regarding the bolstering of the left-back spot will be made in January with careful consideration.
