Barcelona veteran likely to sign a new contract and continue at the club

Sergio Busquets is one of many Barcelona players looking at an uncertain summer ahead. The veteran has been an excellent servant for the club over the years, having featured in 700 competitive matches.
But with his contract expiring at the end of the season, there are fears that Barcelona may soon need to find a new defensive midfielder. They have already begun their search for a number six, with Martin Zubimendi emerging as one of the targets.
The Barcelona coaching staff is keen on keeping hold of Busquets for at least another season, as they consider him a crucial asset to the team. Xavi Hernandez, for one, is expected to do everything in his power to convince the veteran, with whom he shares a healthy relationship.
In fact, a report from Javi Miguel suggests Busquets is still mulling over his future and is favouring a continuation at Barcelona despite speculations over a potential move elsewhere.
Reports earlier this season did suggest that the midfielder harbours the hope of moving to the United States of America to play in the Major League Soccer. Inter Miami were among the clubs interested in his services, and there was a possibility that Busquets may reunite with former Barça teammate Lionel Messi.
But with the Argentine international likely to continue at Paris Saint-Germain, it appears Busquets is considering prolonging his stay at Camp Nou.
This could serve as a major boost for Barcelona, effectively giving them additional time to scout or groom a proper replacement for the Spaniard, who recently retired from international football following La Roja’s debacle at the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
Busquets is currently the third-highest appearance maker in Barcelona’s history with 701 games. Staying at Camp Nou until the end of the 2023/24 campaign could potentially see him beat second-placed Xavi’s record of 767 appearances.
