Over the past couple of weeks, reports of Barcelona’s interest in Manchester City captain Ilkay Gundogan have spiked, with some outlets even suggesting that a deal is already on the way to being completed.

However, Fabrizio Romano has now come up with a fresh update on the situation of the German midfielder.

According to the Italian transfer expert, Barcelona have held internal discussions about signing Gundogan this summer and ‘very interested’ in the 32-year-old. This has also been conveyed to the entourage of the veteran midfielder.

The update from Romano adds that the Blaugrana have very good relations with Gundogan’s agents as well. However, as things stand, the former Borussia Dortmund mainstay is yet to make a decision on his next move.

The midfielder has not informed Manchester City that he intends to leave the club in the summer as of yet, with some reports suggesting that an extension is not entirely ruled out at this point.

At the same time, however, it has also been reported that Gundogan has already spoken with Barcelona manager Xavi Hernandez and is open to moving to Spotify Camp Nou.

Barcelona view Gundogan as a good signing due to his availability on a free transfer, along with his versatility, experience and the fact that he is familiar with Pep Guardiola’s tactical philosophy which would make it easier for him to adapt at the club.

His signing would also allow Xavi to rest and rotate the likes of Pedri and Sergio Busquets more without a drop in quality on the pitch.

However, Romano maintains that the 32-year-old German midfielder is yet to decide on his next steps and the ball is in his court as things stand.

In case he does decide to move to Barcelona, Gundogan will likely have to agree to a pay cut given the Catalans’ Financial Fair Play issues. A clearer picture on the veteran’s stance should emerge in the coming weeks.
