It seems like Barcelona director Mateu Alemany’s meeting with the agent of Ousmane Dembele has not gone according to plans, according to Santi Ovalle.

The Catalan club’s transfer chief flew to Morocco on Monday to meet with the 24-year-old’s representative, Moussa Sissoko and restart negotiations over a new contract for the winger.

With the Frenchman’s current deal expiring in less than three months, there has been a lot of talk recently about the two parties wanting to restart negotiations over a contract extension.

Dembele is believed to be very happy at the club and is enjoying playing under Xavi Hernandez. At the same time, the fans and the club, to a certain extent, have warmed up to the idea of him staying beyond the current season due to his superlative form in recent weeks.

So, it was seen as a positive step when Alemany made the trip to Marrakesh to begin discussions over a possible renewal for the former Borussia Dortmund ace. However, as per the update from Santi Ovalle, things have not panned out as envisioned.

The journalist, who is close to Dembele’s camp, has claimed that the two parties failed to reach an agreement during the meeting, with Alemany already on his way back from Marrakesh.

However, Ovalle further adds that it does not mean that the negotiations will end at this point. Instead, another fresh meeting is set to take place between the club’s representatives and Dembele’s agent soon as efforts will continue to be made to arrive at a resolution.

Reports have claimed that the 2018 FIFA World Cup winner’s camp will demand a deal worth €20 million per year, and meeting those demands is pretty much out of the question for Barça.

So, the feeling within the club, as per the update from Ovalle, is that striking an agreement will be difficult, given the current financial situation.
