In what could be yet another blow in Barcelona’s plans in the transfer market this summer, it appears Franck Kessie is keen on staying at Camp Nou.

This has been reported by Mundo Deportivo, which suggests the Ivorian wants to continue his career at Barcelona despite receiving a lucrative offer to play in Saudi Arabia. The report points out a series of reasons why Kessie is favouring a prolonged stay at Camp Nou.

The most obvious one is that Kessie does not want to leave just a year after joining Barcelona. He was a free agent last summer and had personally turned down other lucrative offers, in favour of a move to Camp Nou. Therefore, he feels a summer exit could be a bit too early for him.

Kessie wants to prove himself at Barcelona by staying one more season. He believes he has what it takes to become a success at Camp Nou. The Ivorian truthfully performed well since the turn of the year, though his form dissipated during the final phase of the campaign.

Xavi does not want to keep Kessie at the club, as he is looking for a different profile. Following the exit of Sergio Busquets, the club are desperately looking for a new defensive midfielder in the market, with Oriol Romeu emerging as one of the options.

Barcelona have already beefed up their midfield unit by roping in Ilkay Gundogan. Kessie’s prolonged stay at the club, therefore, could be a hindrance in the player’s development, while Barcelona themselves could miss out on the chance to reduce the salary mass.

From Barça’s perspective, though, Kessie has every right to remain at Camp Nou. The club understand the sacrifices the player made last summer. However, a sale is still not ruled out, especially if the Ivorian receives a good offer from European leagues such as the Premier League or the Bundesliga.
