It has been a month since Barcelona were hammered 4-1 by Real Madrid in the finals of the Spanish Super Cup in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

Having outplayed the Merengues in the exact same setting a year ago, it was Xavi’s Blaugrana who were on the receiving end of a haranguing defeat, one that sets the wheels in motion for the manager’s decision to leave the club once the season is over.

Now, a fresh detail has come up regarding the Barcelona players and a special request they made before the Super Cup final.

Barcelona players wanted a bonus if they won the Super Cup

As per a report from La Vanguardia (h/t Mundo Deportivo), Barcelona players asked for a special bonus from the club if they were to win the Spanish Super Cup last month.

It is being claimed that two of the team captains, representing the squad, held a relaxed meeting with club president Joan Laporta at the hotel where they were staying, the JW Marriot, hours before the final against Real Madrid which was played at Al-Awwal Park.

During this meeting, the players asked for a special bonus from the club if they went on to win the Super Cup, which could be extended to the rest of the professionals who work with them daily, i.e. physical trainers, nutritionists, physiotherapists, a total of 30 employees.

During the chat, the Barça players suggested that their colleagues at Real Madrid would receive a bonus in the event of winning the final.

After hearing the request, Laporta contacted his entourage to confirm with Real Madrid president Florentino Perez whether he did indeed intend to reward his players with part of the prize for winning the Super Cup.

Although there were reports that a sum of €150,000 would be distributed among the Real Madrid players, the answer that the Barça entourage obtained from their rivals was that there would be no bonus for the Super Cup.

As such, the request from the Barça squad was not granted, with the club introducing the policy of not handing bonuses for the Super Cup when Mateu Alemany was still the director of football.
