Barcleona’s struggles with Financial Fair Play has seen them miss out on a bunch of young talents, especially those hailing from South America.

Earlier this week, a report suggested that Barça could have signed two of Argentina’s World Cup heroes in Enzo Fernandez and Julian Alvarez for a combined fee of €30 million in January 2022. Barcelona were also leapfrogged by Real Madrid in the race to sign Endrick.

Now, according to SPORT, it appears the Catalans are set to miss out on yet another South American talent in Andrey Santos. The Vasco da Gama central midfielder was one of the targets for the Blaugrana due to his exemplary performances in the Brazilian youth leagues.

The club have been monitoring the progress of young Santos for quite some time. But it seems Chelsea have won the race to sign the 18-year-old. The Premier League giants are prepared to pay a fee of around €12.5 million, along with €7.5 million in variables.

The report suggests Barcelona had attempted to sign Santos earlier in the year. The club even had a meeting with Vasco da Gama over the possibility of signing the youngster, who was identified as an ideal long-term prospect in the midfield department.

With Sergio Busquets likely to leave the club at the end of the season, Barcelona had even considered him as a potential replacement for the veteran midfielder.

However, the Catalans’ offer of around €5 million was swiftly rejected by Vasco da Gama, who were determined to hold out for a higher valuation for the prized asset. It was a wise move as the Brazilian outfit are now set to receive €12.5 million upfront for the player.

If everything goes well, Andrey Santos will travel to London in the coming days to complete his move to Stamford Bridge.
