Barcelona are set to continue their squad clearout next summer with several players likely to be on their way out of the club at the end of the season.
One such star who is expected to move on in 2023 is captain Sergio Busquets. The 34-year-old is in the final year of his contract with the club and has shown no desire to renew, despite manager Xavi Hernandez being keen on extending his stay at Camp Nou for another year.
While Busquets may very well be poised to depart at the end of the season, Mundo Deportivo is now reporting that Barcelona are planning to sit down with the veteran star to discuss a possible salary reduction ahead of the January transfer window.
Barça had tried to negotiate a pay cut with Busquets during the summer window as well but were unable to reach an agreement with the club captain and his entourage.
The Spain captain had also turned down a renewal offer at the time and does not seem to have changed his stance regarding prolonging his stay at his boyhood club.
And while he may still leave on June 30 when his deal runs out, Barcelona are hoping to negotiate to adjust his salary for the remainder of the duration of the contract and even possibly include an open one-year extension option which could be used in case he decides to continue.
Either way, Barcelona want to sit down with Busquets and discuss his contract again and have informed his entourage of the same.
It is no secret that the Catalans are again in a muddle with regard to Financial Fair Play issues and need to generate room on their wage bill.
They will be operating in the 1/1 rule in the January window and as president Joan Laporta recently alluded to, they could be in a better position to sign players in the winter than in the summer when the club will have to work under the 1/4 rule, which will make things difficult.
Busquets agreeing to a wage reduction, to that end, could help Barcelona’s efforts to bring in players in January. It remains to be seen how talks with the 34-year-old progress.
