Barcelona have been working tirelessly to sign a player or two in compliance to what Xavi has demanded. After selling Memphis Depay and Hector Bellerin, while also offloading Gerard Pique, it is only natural that the coaching staff have asked for another player on deadline day.

Several players have been linked to the club, including those from across the continent. For example, LA Galaxy’s Julian Araujo. Others, slightly closer, include Sofyan Amrabat of Fiorentina.

Barça are trying to push for a deal for the Moroccan midfielder all day, and had even tabled their first formal offer in the form of €3 million in loan fee and an option to buy for nearly €37 million.

However, their proposal was rejected by Fiorentina, who want to keep him at least until the summer. If not, they want Barcelona to move ahead with a permanent transfer, or one that includes an obligation to buy in the summer.

After a ton of negotiations, Barcelona now consider the deal to be ‘off’, according to Fabrizio Romano.

The two sides were in talks all day, with the player’s agents pushing for a move alongside the club. The Serie A giants refused to budge, though, and eventually, the move broke down.

Ferran Martinez claims that Barça are now seeking alternatives elsewhere, but any move right now is very complicated. It would have to be a last-minute option like Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in the winter of 2022.

Amrabat, in particular, was very keen on the move to La Liga, and had skipped training today to push for it. He was even dropped from Fiorentina’s squad list for the game against Torino tomorrow.

Eventually, given Barcelona’s tough financial situation, it seems impossible that they will sign any player this winter. Amrabat, among others, will have to wait for sunny June for their dream move.
