Barcelona have one of the strongest defensive cores in the world, with Ronald Araujo, Jules Kounde, Andreas Christensen, and Inigo Martinez patrolling central defence. Alejandro Balde mans the left-back position, while Joao Cancelo is his partner in crime, albeit on loan.

This backline, though, has not been at its best this season despite having an incredible last campaign, especially in the league. Kounde and Araujo, especially, have had spells of poor form, leading to mistakes, and consequently, goals.

And it seems Barcelona want to shuffle their backline once again, and are ready to press the buy-back option on one of their former defender, Chadi Riad, as per a report by SPORT.

Plying his trade for Real Betis, Riad has had a wonderful season so far, and is one of the best centre-backs in the league. Barcelona are happy with his performances, and are ready to call him back after just one season.

He will be a part of the first team, competing against some of the most talented in their respective positions for a spot.

The money behind the deal

Riad left Barcelona in the summer after the club signed Inigo Martinez on a free transfer from Athletic Club. The Spanish international was coming off a superb season, and there was little to no chance the La Masia defender would have gotten minutes over him.

He joined Real Betis on loan, with an option to purchase for €3.5 million, either at the end of the season, or if he played a certain number of games.

Riad broke into the Betis team early, and has already met the criteria the two clubs set for him in the summer. As such, the Seville-based outfit will have to shell out €3.5 million for him either way.

Now, Barcelona had also inserted a 50% sell-on clause, and an option to repurchase him for €7 million in the first year after his transfer. They have already made their decision to do so, and have informed Betis about it, as well.
