Barcelona planning free transfer swoop for Chelsea defender in the summer

Having dipped their toes into the free transfer market this past summer for the signings of Memphis Depay, Sergio Aguero and Eric Garcia, Barcelona may be tempted to do so again come summer of 2022.

The club’s finances continue to remain an issue, and with multiple areas needing to be strengthened, it would bode well for the Catalans to look at cost-effective options in the market.

And as per journalist Gerard Romero (h/t Twitch), Barcelona have their sights set on Chelsea defensive mainstay Andreas Christensen, who is in the final year of his contract with Blues and will become a free agent at the end of the ongoing campaign.

The 25-year-old, a product of the Chelsea academy, has had to work hard to carve out a place for himself in the side at Stamford Bridge. Despite impressing heavily on a two-year loan stint with Borussia Monchengladbach, the Dane has had to bide his time to become a regular but has made his chance count over the past year or so.

Christensen has chalked up a total of 140 appearances for the west London outfit and was part of the team that won the UEFA Champions League last season. He has been solid again this term, helping Thomas Tuchel’s side to the top of the Premier League table.

The Danish international’s contract with Chelsea expires next year. Talks over a new deal have been ongoing, but Romero insists that Barcelona are ready to swoop in for the centre-back and have his signing ‘under control’.

With Gerard Pique in the last stages of his career and Samuel Umtiti out of favour, a new central defender is a necessity for the Blaugrana come 2022. Christensen, at 25, is vastly experienced at the highest level, and at the same time, has his best years in front of him.

Getting him on a free transfer would be a coup for Barcelona, although Christensen has recently insisted that he hopes to sign a new contract with Chelsea, which would throw a spanner in the works for the Catalans.
