Wave after wave of news continues to flow out surrounding the updates in Barcelona’s offices. The most shocking of them all is undoubtedly the decision to part ways with Dani Alves later this month.

However, the Brazilian’s departure does not come without a backup plan in place. According to reports from Anais Marti, Barcelona are now optimistic over their chances of signing Cesar Azpilicueta in the current window.

The Spanish international has not made any binding decision over his future, but reports in recent weeks stress that he has been pushing for a move to Camp Nou.

Azpilicueta has entered the final year of his contract at Chelsea and sees a spell in Spain to be the perfect swansong to his career.

Though the veteran has been clear about his decision for a long time now, the chaotic environment in Chelsea’s offices after Roman Abramovic’s departure stalled talks around his future. With Boehly now in charge at the helm, the Catalans are optimistic about talks restarting.

Azpilicueta is expected to replace Dani Alves in Xavi’s setup for the coming season. Alongside Sergino Dest and Sergi Roberto, he will form the core of the club’s fullback position.

The Chelsea captain will arrive at Camp Nou with no dearth of experience in his pocket. He has made over 320 Premier League starts for the London-based side since his arrival in 2012/13 and scored ten goals in that duration.

His leadership will be a welcome addition to Barcelona’s young squad, much like Dani Alves’ influence in the past year. Yet, at just 32 years of age, the Spaniard promises more longevity than his Brazilian counterpart.
