Following the season-ending ACL injury to Gavi, Barcelona have been hard at work to sign a new midfielder in the January transfer window.

A number of players have been linked with a move to Catalonia, with the latest one being Manchester City outcast Kalvin Phillips.

The 28-year-old Englishman is not playing regularly under Pep Guardiola at Manchester City and is all set to depart this month, most likely on a loan deal.

And, Barcelona have been credited with a serious interest in the former Leeds United midfielder, who himself is said to be open to joining the La Liga champions.

No contact between Barcelona, Manchester City

While there may be interest in Phillips, journalist Matteo Morretto is reporting that so far there has been no contact between Barcelona and Manchester City over a move for the midfielder.

The report reiterates what has been previously suggested, that Barça’s sporting director Deco is a fan of the England international and wants him at the club.

It is also claimed that Phillips has a very good relationship with the Blaugrana’s winger Raphinha, having shared the dressing room with him back at Leeds United.

Despite all that, though, there is no contact between the two clubs thus far. Meanwhile, other clubs, mainly West Ham United, are pushing hard to sign Phillips from Manchester City.

Deal seen as complicated

The report further underlines what is well known by this point – Barcelona’s financial situation makes a deal to sign Phillips complicated.

Indeed, even though he is a player that Deco likes, the club’s economic issues make the 28-year-old an unviable solution for now.

Barça understand that pulling off the operation will be difficult but are not yet ready to throw in the towel.

However, with no shortage of suitors for Phillips, Barcelona must act swiftly or risk missing out on the ex-Leeds star.
