Barcelona not completely convinced by on-loan superstar, Xavi was never in favour of his signing

Despite the departure of some important players, and the existing lack of others in some positions, Barcelona decided against investing too much money in the summer transfer window, relying on cost-effective measures to reinforce their squad.

Ilkay Gundogan was signed on a free transfer alongside Inigo Martinez, who was brought in to cover the defence from Athletic Club. The Catalans bought Oriol Romeu from Girona for €3.5 million, as well.

And to cap it all off, loan deals for Joao Cancelo and Joao Felix were confirmed on deadline day.

The Portuguese duo have had their fair share of impressive performances so far this season, but the former has consistently been one of the better performers for Xavi’s side, while the latter’s displays have been topsy-turvy at best.

Xavi is not particularly happy with Felix, either, as per a report by Javi Miguel. The coach is not convinced by his performances, and was never actually in favour of signing him in the first place.

Barcelona reconsidering purchasing Felix

The Spanish gaffer wanted to bring in a midfielder so Barcelona could continue playing with four midfielders, but Joan Laporta convinced the board and coaches eventually, and the deal went through.

After a series of inconsistent performances, though, the final straw for Xavi was Felix’s abysmal showing against bottom-of-the-league Almeria. The 24-year-old was substituted off at half-time for Ferran Torres.

Barcelona have now started internal discussions whether to sign Felix or not in the summer. They have technical doubts about the player in addition to the obvious economic problems at the club that would not allow them shelling out an obscene amount.

Xavi wants a Gavi replacement

Now, the report also says that Xavi had decided to play with four midfielders after Barcelona’s performance in El Clasico. Pedri and Frenkie de Jong, returning from injuries, would join Gavi and Ilkay Gundogan in this setup.

However, Gavi’s ACL injuries ruined Xavi’s plans, and Felix re-entered the starting lineup plans.

The coach now wants Barcelona to sign a midfielder in January so he can reimplement the tactic, and also rotate the midfielders in the setup, who are already doing a lot of heavy lifting.
