Memphis Depay’s first season at Barcelona has been a mixed bag. He started off the season almost single-handedly carrying the frontline, but has since fallen off due to injury and inconsistency. Now with an overloaded frontline, where does his future lie?

A new report from Fichajes reveals that a summer departure for Depay is imminent. The Dutchman is on the lower end of the pecking order up-front, and he has failed to impress when showcased, most recently against Galatasaray.

Depay has ten goals and two assists this campaign; four of his goals are penalties. His overall impact on the game waxes and wanes, and perhaps it’s this inconsistency that could see him depart the Camp Nou.

To be fair, Depay’s performances have been admirable, just nothing otherworldly. Furthermore, the source states that the arrivals of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Ferran Torres, and Adama Traore have deemed his services as surplus to requirements – more so if Barcelona manage to sign Erling Haaland.

It also looks like Barca’s new arrivals fit Xavi’s game-plan more than Depay.

In all, Depay remains a game-changing forward – on his day – and he would undoubtedly attract offers from other clubs. Given that he was signed on a free last summer, Barcelona also stand to make a significant profit if he is sold. The financial aspect of this deal can not be ignored as the Catalans are pursuing a huge haul this summer.

Flashback to the beginning of the season; no one would have expected Depay to have one foot out the door. That is, unless his fortunes change significantly.
