Barcelona and Octobers do not appear to share the best of relationships. The Catalans have suffered a consistent drain in quality towards the middle of the season year after year, and this season is no different.

Heading into a critical segment of the season, Xavi Hernandez stares down a long list of absentees through injury.

The likes of Frenkie de Jong, Robert Lewandowski, and Raphinha, doubts for the impending El Clasico while Sergi Roberto, Jules Kounde, and Pedri are essentially ruled out already.

Xavi will not recover a key star

According to reports earlier this week, the manager was expected to be able to count on up to three of the injured players to return against Real Madrid.

The situation, however, grows grim with every passing hour. Pedri has been ruled out of the Clasico in recent hours, and SPORT goes on to add that Frenkie de Jong will join him on the sidelines.

The Dutchman suffered an injury to his right ankle in the Catalans’ 3-2 win over Celta Vigo last month.

The 26-year-old was initially expected to be out until early November, although reports of a quicker return made the rounds in recent weeks.

The latest update, however, crushes the hope of any such preponed return.

The Dutchman could sit out for close to another month

SPORT goes on to add that De Jong’s fitness is the management’s utmost priority as he is seen as one of the most critical players to Barcelona’s success.

The Dutchman may not feature for the club until the end of the next international break and is thus expected to return in Barcelona’s clash against Rayo Vallecano at the end of the month.

De Jong will, thus, miss the games against Real Madrid, Real Sociedad, Shakhtar Donetsk (reverse fixture) away from home, and Alaves in November.
