Ahead of the 2022/23 season, Barcelona were racked up to the brim with central midfielders.
Pedri, Frenkie de Jong, Gavi, Nico Gonzalez, Franck Kessie, and Miralem Pjanic were fighting for two spots in the 4-3-3, while Sergio Busquets’ defensive midfield role remained largely uncontested.
However, in pre-season, Xavi opted to use Pjanic in that lone pivot role as Busquets’ backup, and the Bosnian was fairly impressive. His ability to replicate the Spaniard’s role in possession was key to his continuity at the club. Or so we thought.
According to Gerard Romero, Pjanic is on the exit ramp. His agents were in Barcelona’s offices today to present and study offers they have received as of now. Among those is Saudi Arabian giant Al-Nassr.
This is especially surprising because Xavi expressed his decision to let Pjanic stay publicly in a press conference. The veteran midfielder was also reportedly ready to slash his salary further to help the club.
“Pjanic has convinced me and he will stay with us,” he said ahead of the Rayo Vallecano game two weeks ago.
In fact, his confidence in Pjanic was also catalyst in Nico Gonzalez’s departure, who left on loan, joining Valencia.
Everyone assumed Pjanic would get the nod in defensive midfield after Busquets picked up a red card vs Rayo, but Xavi opted to use a double pivot of de Jong and Pedri against Real Sociedad.
The Bosnian is among five Barcelona players this season yet to play a single minute this season. And the reports today only further add fuel to the fire for his departure.
