Barcelona have a monumental task at their hands as Sergio Busquets’ departure has meant they will be in the market looking for a defensive midfielder in the summer. Their search, so far, has not yielded positive results.

While the list is long, each player comes with their own problems. Bayern Munich do not want to sell Joshua Kimmich, while Real Sociedad refuse to budge from Martin Zubimendi’s €60 million valuation.

On the other hand, the sporting staff are not convinced by Ruben Neves in a singe pivot. Other options, such as Liverpool Montevideo’s Fabricio Diaz, are far too inexperienced, making any possible transfer a high-risk, high-reward scenario.

Further, it seems Diaz’s stocks are rising, as, according to a report by Mundo Deportivo, his price tag has increased from €6 million to €8 million following a spell of impressive performances during the U-20 World Cup with Uruguay.

Barcelona will also face a ton of competition for his signature, as the likes of PSG, Inter Milan, Lazio, Villarreal, Flamengo, and River Plate are also looking to sign him. The player, however, is in no hurry to decide his future.

Less than a month ago, Diaz was asked about rumours emerging linking him to Barça, and he seemed relaxed about any potential interest.

“I don’t know, I don’t know anything. But obviously, you follow social networks, and nowadays, we all see everything. And obviously, I saw it.

“But that’s handled by my agent, it’s handled by my club, and now I’m completely focused here, I want to have a great World Cup, I want to win the World Cup with Uruguay. First this. After that, we’ll see what will happen,” he added.

Diaz is among the many names Barcelona are considering as Busquets’ replacement, but as a 20-year-old, it would be interesting to see if they actually end up pursuing his signature as the first-choice pivot in the team.
