With Barcelona running out of targets for the midfield pivot positions, reports had indicated that they have identified Fulham and Portugal ace Joao Palhinha as a possible option.

The options of Joshua Kimmich and Martin Zubimendi are practically off the table due to the economics involved. Now, another priority target, Marcelo Brozovic, appears to be headed to Saudi Arabian giants Al Nassr.

Amidst this, Palhinha has been identified as a potential alternative by the La Liga champions, with incoming sporting director Deco said to be an admirer of the Portuguese international.

However, according to a report from Daily Mail, Fulham will only consider selling Palhinha this summer if they receive an offer of around £90 million (€104.7 million), putting him out of Barcelona’s reach for good.

Palhinha signed for Fulham only last year, arriving from Sporting CP in a deal worth £15 million. The 27-year-old had a top debut season in the Premier League, finishing with three goals from 35 appearances, while also making the most number of tackles in the competition.

The report states that Deco has personally batted for the signing of Palhinha, who is also a target for West Ham United, as a possible replacement for Declan Rice.

The Portuguese international is liked by the La Liga champions for his ability to break up attacks and his quality on the ball. However, a move appears unlikely due to the massive £90 million valuation.

Palhinha still has four years on his contract with Fulham with an option for another twelve months. So, it puts the Cottagers in the driving seat as far as negotiations are concerned.

So, despite Deco being an admirer, the 27-year-old moving to Barcelona in the summer looks like a very distant possibility.

Instead, fellow Portuguese Florentino Luis could be a more affordable option, with SL Benfica understood to be seeking €30 million for him.
