Guido Rodriguez is one of the many midfielders Barcelona continue to monitor as part of their wishlist.

Xavi Hernandez sees the Argentine to be a valuable asset in the middle of the park and even tried to sign him in the recent summer transfer window.

While things did not work out in June, the Catalans hope to sign the player next summer when he will be a free agent.

The operation could even be preponed to January if the player refuses to renew with Los Verdiblancos, with the Blaugrana looking to reinforce the pivot midfield position.

Rodriguez talks about his future

Speaking to the media after Real Betis’ draw against Cadiz on Sunday, the midfield star was asked about his contract that was expiring in June.

“We will talk in a few months, but we are in constant conversations with the club. They know what I want and I think we understand each other,” he cryptically said via SPORT, keeping the door open for any possibility.

“We are in talks as the president explained. It was a busy summer and now we are in a moment of calm,” he added.

The 29-year-old did not start for the Verdiblancos in their 5-0 hammering to Barcelona. Yet, he played the full game against Cadiz and even scored his team’s only goal on Sunday.

A comprehensive midfield squad

While Barcelona are still in pursuit of Rodriguez, their interest in the player does not arise from any deficiency in the existing squad.

At the moment, Xavi Hernandez is spoilt for options in the middle of the park. More importantly, no two of his midfielders bring the same skillset to the table.

Oriol Romeu is currently the manager’s best bet in the defensive midfield, and it is safe to say that he has done a fabulous job to this point.

In Pedri and Ilkay Gundogan, the coach has two solid creative options, while Frenkie de Jong and Gavi round up the list with unique attributes of their own.

Yet, the club feel the need to have another option in the defensive midfield role as cover and competition for Romeu, making Rodriguez a target, along with some other cost-effective options.
