With Barcelona scouring the market for a new defensive midfielder, a number of players like Arthur Vermeeren, Gabriel Moscardo, Sergi Altimira, and Wilfred Ndidi, among others, have been touted as potential targets.

As things stand, Oriol Romeu is the only natural No. 6 in the ranks for Barça and the club are keen on reinforcing the position in the summer transfer window of 2024.

As such, apart from the aforementioned set of players, the La Liga champions are looking at and gathering information about several talented pivot midfielders.

Federico Redondo on Barcelona’s radars

Amidst this SPORT’s Tomas Andreu is reporting that Barcelona have set their sights on Argentinos Juniors midfield prospect Federico Redondo, the son of Real Madrid legend Fernando Redondo.

The report goes on to add that Barça have already lodged enquiries with the youngster’s entourage to gauge his interest in a move to Europe.

Redondo, 20, has made 52 senior appearances for Argentinos Juniors, even scoring a goal and setting up two more. His contract with the club expires on December 31, 2024.

The young midfielder’s game has improved a great deal in recent months, so much so that he is seen as the future of Argentina’s midfield.

Real Madrid connection could be an issue

Barcelona have had his name on the table since the summer and have received very good reports about the young Argentine.

However, Redondo’s connections with Real Madrid are seen as a hurdle as the Catalans fear that their arch-rivals might have already locked in his future.

As mentioned earlier, Fede Redondo is the son of Real Madrid legend Fernando Redondo and also happens to be the nephew of another ex-Merengues star Santiago Solari, who is now the technical director at the Santiago Bernabeu.

These connections could complicate Barcelona’s chances of actually signing Redondo, with the midfielder himself understood to be waiting for Real Madrid to make an approach next summer.

Meanwhile, Ajax have also contacted his entourage and asked about a potential transfer. So, it remains to be seen if Barcelona stand a chance of signing Busquets in the near future.
