Mundo Deportivo reports that Barcelona are looking to sign five or six players this summer in an effort to fill the voids in the squad. Considering the club’s economic situation, half of the acquisitions are expected to involve free agents.
The one guaranteed signing according to the Spanish outlet is Inigo Martinez. The Spanish defender is out of contract at Athletic Club this summer and will arrive to strengthen the backline.
In addition to the centre-back, Barcelona have their eyes on a pivot, an interior, a winger and a striker for the upcoming transfer window.
Two signings are thus expected to be made for the middle of the park. Ilkay Gundogan could arrive as a versatile option for Xavi Hernandez.
The Manchester City star is better placed as an interior but has played in a double pivot for Pep Guardiola’s side on need. Yet, the Catalans could look toward Sofyan Amrabat as an alternative solution as the pivot.
Vitor Roque is Laporta’s dream signing for the centre-forward position but the transfer will depend on the result of the bidding war between Europe’s elite. In case the Brazilian starlet does not arrive, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s return is not ruled out.
On the wing, Xavi Hernandez’s side have been linked with Dani Olmo and Marco Asensio in recent weeks. Given the presence of Ousmane Dembele and Raphinha down the right, however, it would naturally be a left-winger who they might target.
Ironically, the right-back position that was said to be the team’s Achilles heel has reportedly been sacrificed for the greater good. Come next season, the Blaugranas could again turn to Jules Kounde or Ronald Araujo at right-back with Sergi Roberto making for a more than able backup.
