Despite a successful summer transfer window that saw them rope in the likes of Robert Lewandowski and Jules Kounde, Barcelona remain on the hunt for newer options in the transfer market.
One of the club’s potential targets in the market right now is Martin Zubimendi. The club have been monitoring the progress of the Real Sociedad midfielder for a while now, with many in the camp considering him as the ideal long-term replacement for Sergio Busquets.
With the veteran midfielder likely to leave the club at the end of the season, the addition of someone like Zubimendi could go a long way in shaping up the future of the Barça midfield.
However, according to a report from El Diario Vasco (h/t MARCA), Barcelona have been dealt a massive blow in their hopes of singing Zubimendi as it appears the player is closing in on signing a contract renewal with Real Sociedad.
After months of negotiations, Los Txuri-Urdin have been able to close in on an agreement with the player, especially from an economic perspective. The two parties are close to reaching a final agreement and the contract could soon be officiated.
Zubimendi’s current deal at Real Sociedad expires in 2025. But the new deal will see him extend his contract until 2027. It may also see the club increase its existing release clause of €60 million to a higher figure, in their attempts to fend off suitors for the midfielder.
This could serve as a major blow for Barcelona, who have been priced out of a move for the midfielder in the past and may face the same fate once again.
The Catalans have been looking for a reliable Busquets replacement for a long time. And with Zubimendi seemingly out of contention, it will be interesting to see the kind of approach the Blaugrana take in the coming months.
