As Barcelona continue to scour the market for a new defensive midfielder to compete with and replace Sergio Busquets, a new name has popped up on their radars.

According to SPORT, Barcelona are interested in PSV Eindhoven midfielder Ibrahim Sangare and could look to make a move for him as a replacement for captain Busquets.

The 24-year-old Ivory Coast international is a familiar face for the Blaugrana as they had held talks to sign him from Toulouse in the past while working on the deal for Jean-Clair Todibo in 2019.

A year later, Barça had approached Sangare’s agent again but decided not to pursue the midfielder. Eventually, he signed for PSV in the summer of 2020 in a deal worth €7.5 million and has grown leaps and bounds over the past couple of seasons.

Indeed, the 24-year-old has carved out a reputation for himself as one of the most robust midfielders in Europe thanks to his ball-winning capabilities in the centre of the park.

In addition to that, the Ivorian has also improved considerably in the distribution and ball-progression aspects of his game, which earned him a lot of interest from England this past summer.

Clubs in the Premier League remain keen to sign him in January as well, with Barcelona also joining the list of suitors for the PSV mainstay.

The report states that the Catalans have had good reports on the Eredivisie star for a long time now and they could look to pull the trigger on him in the coming months.

What is clear at this point is that Barça want to sign a midfielder to bolster their pivot position. They are looking for a player who can act as an effective conduit between the two halves of the pitch and provide fluidity in possession while being strong defensively.

Martin Zubimendi of Real Sociedad is liked a lot within the Catalan club’s camp, but he recently signed a new long-term contract with La Real.

Ruben Neves is another option but manager Xavi is not convinced by the Portuguese international. Enzo Fernandez of SL Benfica is another option, but his price tag could become an issue.

Sangare, thus, has emerged as a viable alternative for Barcelona. The 24-year-old is valued at more than €30 million and could leave PSV next year, either in January or in the summer. Whether the Catalans swoop in for him and pursue other targets remains to be seen.
