FC Barcelona are suffering from a sporting crisis, especially after their elimination from the UEFA Champions League. For the first time since 1995, the Catalans have now been knocked out of the UCL group stages for two seasons in a row.

In light of their elimination, Barcelona are expected to fast-track the process of trimming the squad, in order to make way for new signings.

In the current setup, experienced players such as Gerard Pique, Jordi Alba, and even Sergio Busquets have turned out to be major disappointments, often failing to maintain consistency.

They also happen to be among the highest-paid players in the setup, which has led Barcelona to consider sanctioning their exits in the upcoming January transfer window.

The same has been confirmed by Alfredo Martinez (h/t RadioEstadioNoche), who suggests the club are keen on offloading a couple of players in the winter transfer window.

The players in question are Pique and Alba, both of who have lost their prominence in Xavi’s gameplan and have no prospects for the future. As such, Barça want to sanction their sale in January, which can not only help them trim their squad but also make space for new signings.

However, getting rid of them in January will not be a straightforward task. As per earlier reports, Barcelona owe Pique and Alba a total of around €85 million and €60 million respectively.

Although the club are reportedly considering paying out the figure in order to facilitate the exit, they must also reach agreements with the players themselves.

This could prove to be difficult as Pique has already refused to lower his salary earlier in the season while Alba has shown no desire to leave Camp Nou.

Reports on Thursday indicated that there had been no negotiations taken place to offload the duo in January. While that may be so, but it is Barcelona’s intention to get rid of both Pique and Alba as early as the January transfer window. Only time will tell whether they can find ways to achieve that target.
