Speaking on OnzeTV3, journalist Helena Condis has claimed that Barcelona are trying to sell Frenkie de Jong not because of the club’s financial issues but due to ‘sporting reasons’.

The 25-year-old Dutchman finds himself at the centre of the transfer speculation this summer as Manchester United are pushing to sign him. New Red Devils manager Erik ten hag has made de Jong his priority target for the summer, having coached him at Ajax in the past.

Barcelona, for their part, are also open to selling him. It has been widely reported that the Catalans’ motivation behind their decision to offload the Netherlands international was purely financial.

The Blaugrana are in dire economic situation and need to make sales to balance the books while also trimming down their wage bill to accommodate new signings. De Jong’s salary is set to rise to €19 million next season, which would be an issue for Barça.

So, it was natural for the club to look for options to move him on. However, Helena Condis is now claiming that apart from the finances, Barcelona are also prioritising the sale of de Jong due to sporting reasons.

The journalist claims that manager Xavi Hernandez believes that Manchester City superstar Bernardo Silva, who is among the three priority targets for Barcelona this summer, would be a better fit in his system than Frenkie de Jong.

And that is why Barcelona are open to offers for the former AFC Ajax ace, who has not developed as expected since his €86 million arrival three years ago.

Either ways, it is becoming clear that the Blaugrana are intent on signing Silva this summer. But, for that to happen, they must need to move de Jong out of the club. And with Manchester United waiting to pounce, a deal could be worked out.
